Twenty women from the Golden Isles were honored at the Twelfth Annual Tribute to Women Leaders luncheon held Tuesday, May 11, at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. Approximately 400 guests attended.
Guest speaker was Elaine Griffin, a Brunswick native and New York City designer and author. She is the daughter of Ethel Lizama Griffin, a retired Brunswick educator, who was among the women leaders honored at the luncheon.
The event not only honors accomplished women who have been positive role models and made significant contributions to their community, it is a fund raiser which benefits child care, Young Women’s Career Adventure and aquatics programs at the YWCA. The support of benefactors, sponsors and patrons allows the YWCA to fulfill its mission of providing opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people and the elimination of racism.
This year, the event was dedicated to Duane Harris, a local conservationist, avid community volunteer and former director of the Coastal Resources Division, Department of Natural Resources. He was honored for his “steadfast and sustained” service to the community and to the YWCA of Brunswick.
Honorary co-chairs for the event were Laura Cross McKinley and Carlton DeVooght. Co-chairs were Abra Lattany-Reed and Dr. Tina Kirby.
